The 5th Annual ALS H.O.P.E. Race/Walk is organized by the Physical Therapy Class of 2006 at the Medical University of SC.

ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neuromuscular disorder that affects motor neurons (large nerve cells and their axons that reach from the brain to the spinal cord and muscles throughout the body).  Lou Gehrig, the famous baseball player, was diagnosed with ALS, which is commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”  As the disease progresses, voluntary muscle movements are affected, with total paralysis occurring in the later stages; however, the person’s mind and ability to think remains unaffected.  For more information about ALS, please contact the ALS Association or the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, which serves SC and NC.

All proceeds will be donated to the Carolinas Chapter of the ALS Association to support patients with ALS and to advance research for this progressive disease.  Proceeds will be donated in honor of Mrs. Blanche Bell of Charleston, SC, and Mr. Roy “Arlie” Porter also of Charleston, SC.
